How Our Studies Work

Before you decide if you want to take part in a CSSI study, we will provide you with information about why we are doing the research and what involvement would mean for you. Once you confirm you would like to be involved, we will arrange a pre-screening check over the telephone, followed by a health screening check at the CSSI with one of our clinical research nurses.

Once the study has started you will have a detailed plan of what will happen: including dates and times to attend the CSSI; any instructions for the testing and the testing regime. Our team at CSSI are always happy to support you during the study and can be contacted for any questions during our working hours.

What is a CSSI study?

A CSSI study is a clinical investigation into a medical device or product used on the skin. We follow a detailed plan which explains how the study will be performed, what will be done during the study and why. There are clear guidelines about who can join each study, to ensure the correct participants are recruited to reduce risk and provide reliable results. Every CSSI study must be reviewed by independent experts, to ensure your protection and safety during the study. Participants are monitored closely during the study to ensure all of their needs are met.

Skin testing methods

Our current facilities enable us to examine skin properties such as:

  • Skin pH
  • Skin damage
  • Skin elasticity
  • Moisture content
  • Skin colour
  • Skin topography

We are also able to perform measurable peel testing for skin adhesive investigations and can test on a variety of body sites including:

  • Forearms
  • Back
  • Abdominal
